I was doing competitive research this morning when I noticed that the meta descriptions have grown, drastically!
Typically the optimal description length is between 150-160 because meta descriptions can be any length, but search engines generally truncate snippets longer than 160 characters. For this reason it’s best to keep the meta descriptions between 150-160 characters.
Some of the new longer meta descriptions in the SERPs are getting as much as 350 characters! Here are some other examples:

After discussing internally with one of my colleagues, we did more tests and found that the meta descriptions get longer as your search query gets longer. As you can see above, one of my search queries had 8 words in it, but as you can see from the screen shot below the meta descriptions are the same with a “typical” search query:
